This volume, 'The Animalising Affliction of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4: Reading Across the Human-Animal Boundary', makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of the human-animal boundary within the Bible. This work is becoming increasingly important as our contemporary society struggles with the differences between human and nonhuman animals in light of contemporary zoological research in the fields of ethology, evolutionary biology, and ecology. In order to have informed theological engagement with these societal issues, there needs to be a firm understanding of how the difference between human and nonhuman animals is presented in the Bible.

The principal section of Atkins’ volume meets this need as it contains the first sustained attempt to delineate the conceptual boundaries between humans and animals within biblical texts. This book also provides the necessary historical groundwork for further research on the Bible in light of critical animal studies. It therefore lays out the foundation for scriptural texts to contribute to our self-understanding in a world inhabited by thousands of different nonhuman creatures.

The book launch aims to highlight these dimensions of Atkins’ volume as well as foster discussion and engagement with the Bible’s relationship to human-animal distinctions.

This event will be followed by a reception.
