"It is a considerable and unexpected honour to be the first (joint) recipient of the Ecclesiastical History Society (EHS) Book Prize. I'm extremely grateful to the officers and members of the EHS – past and present – and to the book prize committee. To borrow from the title of Stella Fletcher's short and witty account of the organisation, the EHS is 'a very agreeable society', indeed, encouraging significant interest in and insightful study of the history of Christianity. Thanks must also go out to the many without whom the book would never have come to be: friends, colleagues, institutions, and above all, my family."
